Li Xian’s 7th-century commentary to the Hou Han Shu recorded jincan as a golden-color caterpillar from Kashmir, while Su E (9th century) described it similarly. A Song dynasty description by Groot notes that a gold caterpillar fed on silk from Shuh (Szĕ-ch‘wen); its ordure caused certain death and could draw possessions to the owner. To dispose of it, an owner would place gold or silver with the caterpillar in a basket and leave it for someone to find, said to be 'giving his gold caterpillar in marriage.'
